Competition Wrap Up!

Pro BMX:

We had the biggest rider turnout in recent years, with over 30 competitors initially signing up in the Pro Class. But after a few mishaps in practice, this was reduced to 24 riders by the time qualifying started. This year, thanks to the change of date (pushed back from late November), some of Australia's top professional riders were able to attend. Dave Dilleward, Colin McKay and Ryan Guettler, who spend most of their year in the US competing on the world biggest stage, were all at this event to show off their skills to their Australian fans for the first time in more than 12 months. In addition to the big names, we also had Dane Searls, Nick Cooper & Cam Pianta riding, all of whom have finished on the podium previously at this event.

With all these riders competing, the level of riding was incredible. We saw some of the hardest tricks, and most technical runs ever at the King of Dirt. In Qualifying, Ryan Guettler was on fire - landing 2 runs that scored above 90 to qualify for the finals in 1st place and send a serious warning to the other competitors. Also cruising into the finals were Colin McKay, Dave Dilleward, Dean Manson and Dane Searls. Who all had solid scores, but you could see they still had more to offer. The qualifying round also saw some upsets, with two favorites, Nick Cooper and Cam Pianta (both top three finishers in 2008), missing the cut. In their place was Chris Courtenay and Bundaberg youngster, Jake May. Jake amazed everyone when he qualified second only to Guettler after jumping all the way to Pro Class from Beginner in 2008.

Once finals started, everyone stepped up a gear. Most notably, Colin McKay and Dave Dilleward. Dave rode first and scored in the high eighties, but Colin came out with a massive run, scoring a ninety six – the highest scoring run of the day. From here, the pressure was on all the others, who knew that McKay had just set the pace. Dean Manson stayed super smooth and consistent to record a run good enough for third place. Dane Searls and Chris Courtenay both made slight errors in their runs, but were good enough for fourth and fifth respectively. While young Jake May and first place qualifier, Ryan Guettler, both crashed out while putting everything on the line to try and beat Colin’s score.

Finals Results:

1. Colin McKay

2. Dave Dilleward

3. Dean Manson

4. Dane Searls

5. Chris Courtenay

6. Jake May

7. Ryan Guettler

Expert BMX:

Eleven up and coming riders signed up for the Expert Class this year, again the largest turnout in a few years. The level of expert class has stepped up dramatically recently, with a whole range of tricks being pulled that used to only be seen in Pro. Josh Collins landed a great run in the final to take to win after a shaky start to the prelims. Jono Short had great style and smooth runs to finish in second, and Matt McKellar came third with some clean, consistent riding.

Finals Results:

1. Josh Collins

2. Jono Short

3. Matt Mackellar

4. Jason Watts

5. Aidan Montero

Beginner BMX:

Five brave young riders entered the Beginner Class at this years King of Dirt. This class was a bit unusual as three of the riders were actually on freestyle Mountain Bikes – not the standard BMX Bikes. But it obviously did not matter as Chris Stahlhut went one better than his last KOD result by taking the win. Second place went to another Mountain Bike rider, Ryan Chesney, while Zac May finished in third.

Finals Results:

1. Chris Stahlhut

2. Ryan Chesney

3. Zac May
